Our April 2023 Picks

April is a bumper month for new romance audiobook releases – every time I thought I’d finished the list, I found more to add! It’s impossible to make this a comprehensive list;  instead we try to choose titles we’re excited to listen to and which look as though they might be interesting (or just because we like the author/narrator, or both!) Doing this post mid-month means it also gives us the chance fo ‘mop up’ any late-month releases from the month before, so you might find a few March releases in this list as well.

We always love hearing from you and having a chat about what new audiobooks you’re planning on listening to, so don’t forget to drop by and tell us what you’re looking forward to in the comments!

The Fairest Show by Gregory Ashe

Narrated by J.F. Harding

This is book three in the First Quarto series and charts the third year of Auggie Lopez’s stint at Wroxhall College in Wahredua.  It’s been a while since the first two books came out, but Theo and Auggie are one of my favourite Ashe couples and J.F Harding’s performance is bound to be wonderful. With two leads with such a lot of emotional baggage, there’s lots of angsty soul-searching going on while the guys are trying to solve the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the daughter of the college football coach. – Caz

Something Spectacular Alexis Hall

Narrated by Robyn Holdaway

I read an arc of this (not very) historical non binary/non-binary romance and enjoyed it – it’s the story of the very sensible, down-to-earth Peggy and Orfeo, a gorgeous castrato (opera singer) who are both carving out a place for themselves in a world where they don’t quite fit. It’s lively, funny, and sometimes silly, and the romance is charming. I’m not familiar with the narrator, but the sample sounds very promising. – Caz

Happy Place by Emily Henry

Narrated by Julia Whelan

A new Emily Henry is a treat and audio is the best way to imbibe given who is narrating. – Kaetrin

If Only You by Chloe Liese

Narrated by Nelson Hobbs & CJ Bloom

I’ve enjoyed other Chloe Liese books and I’m sure I’ll like this one too. – Kaetrin

Inside by Nicky James

Narrated by Nick J. Russo

Inside is the first book in a duology about a prison guard and a guy on death row.  It’s an unusual premise but Nicky James is an intelligent and insightful writer and I’m sure this will be an intense, emotional listen.  Nick J. Russo is in the narrator’s chair, so the narration is bound to be great, too. – Caz

Criminal Intentions S1E7Cult of Personality by Cole McCade

Narrated by Curt Bonnem

This one follows on immediately from the end of the previous book, so it’s time for some soul-searching while Mal and Seong-Jae investigate the murder of a young woman who appears to have been involved in a cult.  Curt Bonnem’s narrations have been absolutely fantastic throughout this series and I know I’m in for a great listen. – Caz

To Hold and Protect by Sandra Owens

Narrated by Patrick Zeller

Single Dad? Check. Dog? Check. Reliably good author and great narrator. I’m in. – Kaetrin

This Bird Has Flown by Susannah Hoffs

Narrated by Susannah Hoffs & Juliet Stevenson

Yes, that’s right. The founder and lead singer of The Bangles wrote (and at least partly narrated) a romance novel. I’m so curious! – Kaetrin

Until I Saw You by Dianna Roman

Narrated by Greg Boudreaux & Iggy Toma

Dianna Roman is a new-to-me author, and I liked the sound of this one; a young man fleeing his abusive ex becomes a caretaker to someone who has recently lost his sight who wants to wallow in misery… it sounds like it could be full of angsty goodness and so right up my alley.  I’ve been meaning to read it in print, but then the audio version landed and I couldn’t hit the “purchase” button quickly enough!! – Caz

I’ll give this a listen on the strength of the narrators alone. – Carrie

To Swoon and To Spar by Martha Waters

Narrated by Anais Inara Chase & Joel Froomkin

I’ve enjoyed the other books in this series in print, so I thought I’d give this one a go in audio, especially as Joel (Leslie) Froomkin is one of the narrators. – Caz
