Our May 2022 Picks

We’re back from our Spring Break with a look at the recent and upcoming audiobook releases we’re most eager to listen to over the next few weeks. As usual, this isn’t designed to be a comprehensive list, but is rather a reflection of the Gals’ individual tastes; we hope you’ll find something here to pique your interest, regardless.

We always love hearing about what new releases you’re planning on listening to as well, so please do drop us a line in the comments.

Meant to Be by Emily Griffin

Narrated by Caroline Hewitt, Robert Petkoff, and Emily Giffin

The blurb for Meant to Be caught my eye and I found the author’s previous book – All We Ever Wanted – to be thought-provoking, so I’m looking forward to listening to her latest. – BJ

A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall

Narrated by Kit Eluvian

I’m not familiar with the narrator, but the book is by Alexis Hall, which is pretty much all I need to know. – Caz

I’ve been waiting for a book like this for what feels like forever. It’s a historical romance featuring a trans heroine who can finally fully embrace her feelings for the man who was once her best friend. Kay Eluvian isn’t a narrator I’ve heard before, but I pre-ordered this book when I first saw it on audible a couple of months ago. – Shannon

From Bad To Cursed by Lana Harper

Narrated by Meg Price

I fell hard for 2021’s Payback’s a Witch, so I’m delighted the sequel is almost upon us. It promises to be another perfect blend of romance and magic. The setting of the first book felt like a character in its own right, and I’m super excited to spend more time there. I’m not familiar with Meg Price as a narrator, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for something fabulous. – Shannon

Book Lovers by Emily Henry

Narrated by Julia Whelan

The combination of this author and this narrator make this a must-listen for me.  – Kaetrin

First off, Julia Whelan is an exceptional narrator, so seeing her name listed on a book I’m excited about just increases my anticipation. Emily Henrys Booklovers has received a ton of positive buzz, and from the synopsis, it looks like it’s all well-deserved. It’s a rom/com of sorts, featuring a bookish heroine on vacation with her sister and just happens to find love with a familiar face while enjoying the summer sun. Definitely sign me up! – Shannon

A Caribbean Heiress in Paris by Adriana Herrera

Narrated by Nneka Okoye

This is a novel set in 1880’s Paris featuring a Caribbean rum heiress and a Scottish duke. Everything about it looks amazing, and since I’m already in love with Adriana Herrera’s writing, this is another that’s been on my preorder list for months. Nneka Okoye is a new-to-me narrator, but I’m hoping for a stellar performance here. – Shannon

Showstopper by Regina Kyle

Narrated by Iggy Toma and Cooper North

I confess this one is on my list purely because those are two of my all-time favourite narrators! – Caz

Something Wilder by Christina Lauren

Narrated by Patti Murin, Jon Root, and Christina Lauren

I’m a huge fan of the writing duo Christina Lauren and I’m eagerly awaiting their latest book which sounds like a fun romp! – BJ

Twist My Heart by Brooke Taylor

Narrated by Tieran Wilder

This one caught my eye when I was browsing Audible – amnesia plot, romantic suspense, tornado and plenty of references to The Wizard of Oz. Sounds fun! – Kaetrin

Seducing the Sorcerer by Lee Welch

Narrated by Joel Leslie

In Seducing the Sorcerer, a down-on-his-luck farm labourer finds himself unexpectedly transported to the dark and looming tower occupied by a powerful and much-feared sorcerer.  Of course, all is not exactly as it seems and the story goes on to combine a sweet and sensual slow-burn romance with political intrigue to produce something entirely fresh and unexpected.  I really enjoyed the book when I read it last year; with Joel Leslie narrating, I’m sure to enjoy the audio, too! – Caz

  1. I’ll be interested to see reviews of the Alexis Hall and the Regina Kyle book. Hall is wonderful, but doesn’t always work for me and with an unknown narrator I’m happy to wait. I’ve never heard of Regina Kyle (great narrators though!!), although me not knowing an author doesn’t really mean much, which is why I come here.

I loved Seducing the Sorcerer (dumb title, imo) and will definitely get it on audio! Welch’s worldbuilding here is so clever, especially the worple horse–such a brilliant idea. Joel Leslie narrated Welch’s earlier book, Salt Magic, Skin Magic and it was so good.

    1. I’ve been working with Caroline at AAR to edit her review of the Hall, so watch out for that. Like you, I’m on the fence becuase it’s a completely new-to-me narrator; sounds okay in samples but samples are often deceiving. I think it’s going to come down to how desperate I am to experience the story.

I’m going to review the Welch and the Kyle here :)
