  1. This past week I took a break from romance to listen to Richard Armitage read two Agatha Christie books: Murder on the Links, and Poirot Investigates (a book of short stories). They were the perfect books for a short road trip to and from my mom-in-law’s memorial service. Clever, funny and distracting.

Next up was Something Fabulous which unfortunately didn’t work for me. However, I’m still glad I gave it a listen because parts of it are wonderful, and Nicholas Boulton’s narration is a joy.

I’m not sure where I’ll go next. I either need a really good romance, or I need to continue listing to mysteries for a while. I’ve had several “meh” romance audiobooks recently and feel gun shy. I’m also hesitant to start The King’s Falcon by Stella Riley because I tend to get sucked into her books, and then get irritated when I have to take breaks for real life. :-) I need a couple of days where I can bury myself in the 20 hour audiobook. Right now might not be a good time.

    1. I know what you mean about taking a break from romance. I’m listening to romance but taking a break in my reading. I’m currently reading Mick Herron’s ‘Slough House’ series, which is due on tv soon, I think. I got the first 6 books a while back when they were on a Kindle offer at 99p each and have dipped into them. I’m reading the third one at the moment. They’re more spy thrillers than mystery but are on audible, I think. I read a lot of spy thrillers back in the day, but these aren’t really like them. More atmospheric, and the author is strong on descriptive writing.

      1. I’m not having a romance break, but I’m low-angsted out, so I’m looking for stories that are “romance and” – romantic suspense, urban fantasy etc. – or are grittier. I can only handle so much fluff and I think I’ve exceeded my tolerance for it.

  2. ‘His Horizon’ was my favourite of Con Riley’s ‘His_____’ trilogy but I haven’t listened to any of them on audio.

Over the past couple of months I’ve enjoyed my listening.
I’d previously read ‘Peter Cabot Gets Lost’ by Cat Sebastian and thought Joel Leslie did a good job with the audio. I’d also read ‘Dearest Malachi Keogh’ by NR Walker, which is a short, Christmas add on to ‘Dearest Milton James’. I love Glen Lloyd’s narrations to these, but then I’m a sucker for an Aussie accent!
I listened to all three of the Thomas Elkin books by NR Walker, which were new to me, and loved them. I loved the way the author dealt with the age gap and how their relationship developed. Great narration by Nick J. Russo.
I picked ‘The Long Way Home’ by ZA Maxfield, an author I’d not read before, on Audible Plus because the story looked appealing and, mainly, because it’s narrated by JF Harding. I thought it was okay but nothing special.
I’ve also listened to ‘Something Fabulous’ twice because I think I’m addicted to it!
I’m currently listening to ‘The Charm Offensive’ by Alison Cochrun and enjoying it. I like her writing style and humour and the narration’s good.

    1. I actually thought His Horizon was the weakest of that trilogy – I gave DIKs to books 2 and 3 when I read them. I’m enjoying His Compass and will probably pick up the next one as well.

I LOVE the Thomas Elkin books – they were my first NR Walker titles and I re-listen regularly. The narration is great, the characters are fantastic; as you say, the age gap is handled incredibly well.

I liked The Long Way Home – the story isn’t all that original but I’d listen to J.F. Harding read the shipping forecast.

I really enjoyed The Charm Offensive, too – and it was a treat to discover that the narrator I wasn’t familiar with (Halstead) turned out to be someone I really like listening to!

      1. Doh, you’re right, I meant to write His Compass, the middle book, which is the book featured above! I thought the first book was by far the weakest too!

I’ve just seen that the audiobook of Lily Morton’s After Felix has been released. I love this book……….

    2. Just jumping in to say I, too, love the Thomas Elkin books on audio! I relistened to them in the fall when I was in a slump and loved them all over again. I also loved the Red Dirt Heart series.
