  1. I started with week with Murder at Pirates Cove by Josh Lanyon, narrated my Matt Haynes. I enjoyed both the cozy mystery story and the narration. I’ll likely continue the series.
Next was Duke of Night by Elizabeth Johns, narrated by Alex Wyndham. This is a predictable closed door romance with some unbelievable extra drama thrown in. I won’t be continuing the series. I was very happy to hear Wyndham back to his non-breathy narrating form, though, which helped me get through the book.
I started Fatal Shadows by Josh Lanyon, narrated by Chris Pattton. Unfortunately after about an hour I stopped because it was just hitting me all wrong. On reflection, I think it’s because to that point at least, there was absolutely no one on Adrein’s side, no supportive friend or family to give some respite for the constant stress and homophobia going on. I’m not sure if that continues. Chris Patton’s narration, again–at least at this point in the book, wasn’t working 100% for me. He emphasizes words in some sentences that didn’t make sense to me, and his voice acting didn’t always match what I thought the emotions of the characters were. That, too, may even out as the book progresses. Almost all the reviews of the book/audiobook are very positive, so it’s probably just how it struck me at the time. My overall mood has a lot to do with how much stress I tolerate in books. I’m going to give this another go in the near future.
Right now I’m listening to Wild Trail by AM Arthur, narrated by Greg Boudreaux, and I’m really enjoying it. Hurrah for Hoopla and my local library!

    1. I’ve been surprised at how much I’m enjoying the Pirate’s Cove books as cosy mysteries aren’t usually my thing. I think JL said there will be 6 – or 8? – in total. I’m sorry the AE book didn’t work though – that’s such a great series, but you do need to read all five to get the full effect!

  2. I decided I should read this series in print instead of listening. Not because of the narration, which is fine, but because when a book is emotionally stressful to me, reading is better. A good narration can make things a little too real. :-) I trust your reviews, and the many, many others that say the AE series is worth it, so I want to give it another try.

I think I’m going to listen to book 2 in the Pirate’s Cove series next. I think my library has all of them.

I absolutely get that. I’ve definitely been brought to tears by some narrators!
