  1. I’m listening to Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell. This was a narrator driven choice. Ell Potter has become one of my new favorite narrators. She sounds a lot like Imogen Church who could record the dictionary and make it riveting.

    1. That sounds like a great story! I’m not familiar with that narrator (or with Imogen Church) – female narrators tend to be very hit and miss for me.

  2. I finished to In the Wreckage by Hailey Turner last Sat., narrated by Greg Boudreaux, giving it a B overall. I’m going to keep going with the series, but perhaps in print for a couple of books because while I really enjoyed them, I’m not willing to spend my credits on them at the moment.

I think listened to The Black Madonna by Stella Riley and narrated by Alex Wyndham. I couldn’t stop listening, and finished the 20+ hour book in about 48 hrs. My family was glad to have me back at the end. I had a huge book hangover after this one. I was completely caught up in the story and loved every minute of it. I’m saving Garland of Straw for a special treat because I know the last two books of the series aren’t on audio (yet?). I gave this one an A+.

I gave myself 24 hours before starting Glitterland by Alexis Hall, narrated by Nicholas Boulton. I’m glad I did because this book, while humorous, is another gut-punch book with mental illness as a background. Hall does a great job with it, and Boulton is simply perfect as the narrator. Another A rated book.

Right now I’m listening to A Cold, Dark Place by Toni Anderson, narrated by Eric C. Dove. I’m going to be glad when this one is over, and don’t know that I will continue with the series even though I own the next three audiobooks (I got them for about $4 total). Dove is a serviceable reader, but not really a voice actor or anywhere near the caliber of narrator I’ve gotten used to. As for the story, it’s fine but not original, and I’m thinking my once love affair with romantic suspense is over. I’m not enjoying the serial killer story or the vigilante subplot. There are lots of unhappy people in this book, including co-workers who don’t trust each other and overbearing family members, plus the love interest is lying to the heroine big-time. It’s kind of exhausting not to have any relief from the tension.

Not sure what I’ll listen to next, but it will be hopefully light and funny!! It may be time to relisten to a known winner.

    1. I’ve just finished reading Toni Anderson’s new book (out next week) Cold Cruel Kiss and it’s terrific. I reviewed a couple of her more recent audios here and at AAR – I thought the narration was pretty good – I gave it a B I think. But I haven’t listened to any of the earlier ones in the series.

I love The Black Madonna – Luciano is such a gorgeous hero and the Basing House showdown is fantastic. I think that’s my favourite book in that series.

      1. Interesting. I finished A Cold Dark Place and it’s all kinds of not ok. I’ll be writing a review on goodreads if you’re interested. Honestly, the authors feelings about the death penalty and government sanctioned vigilante-ism were unsettling. The resolution to the mystery and all the obstacles for the hero/heroine was unbelievable and unsettling. Maybe Dove’s narration has improved, but I didn’t care for it in this book. Very stilted.

        1. I haven’t read it, but I’ll check out your review. GR says it came out in 2014 – hopefully EGD has improved since then!

          1. While I thought her writing was bland, her plot was well thought out and interesting. What I couldn’t get past, besides her impassioned defense of the death penalty, was the while she gave lip service to using legal over illegal means for justice, her resolution to both the story and the relationship dilemma was for politicians and law enforcement to use illegal actions. And, looking at the grades this book is given on Goodreads, a lot of readers don’t seem to have a problem with that (ends justify the means, I guess). I do, and it makes me wary of continuing with her books.
