  1. Well, I have to confess that I haven’t listened to anything this week – I have read a lot though!

My goal for this coming week is to finally listen to Adriana Herrera’s ‘Finding Joy’, which I loved when I read it.

    1. I have weeks like that – although usually I find I’ve either listened to loads and read nothing or vice versa! I remembered your saying you enjoyed the Herrera, so I’ve requested a copy. Fingers crossed the narration is good.

  2. I finished More than a Mistress by Balogh yesterday and didn’t care for it. C at best. Jane alternated between too perfect and yelling “I hate you!” and Tresham was an angsty yo-yo. They both gave me whiplash. Then…THEN…Balogh decides not to let the readers in on the much needed conversation between the characters, opting instead for a completely new character to appear to serve as the foil for the big reveal. ARGH! (I’m all better now.)

I’m almost finished with The Viscount and the Vicar’s Daughter by Mimi Matthews. So far it’s good, although interfering family members continue to be my pet peeve. Justice Eyre isn’t my favorite narrator, but she’s done a good job here.

Next up is either The Work of Art by Mimi Matthews or The Autumn Duchess by Lucinda Brant, both narrated by Alex Wyndham.
I want to listen to His at Night by Sherry Thomas, narrated by the wonderful Kate Reading, but I’m afraid it will be too angsty for the current state of my nerves. ::sigh:: I’m a wimp right now.

    1. I wasn’t that keen on either of Balogh’s Mistress books featuring the brothers. I much preferred ‘The Secret Mistress’, which is about their sister. I read them, not listened to them, though.

      1. I dislike listening to Anne Flosnik, so the The Secret Mistress remains on my never-ending TBR.

        1. I’ve never been able to listen to Anne Flosnik, even though when I first started listening to romance on audio years ago she was very popular. Justine Eyre’s voice sounds fake to me, very affected.

          1. She was very popular – I have no idea why! Her voice always sounded very robotic to me. I’m currently working on an audiobook – I do freelance audiobook proofing – where the female narrator has a similarly affected manner of delivery (to JE). I’m not being paid to critique her performance, but bloody hell is it ANNOYING !!

      2. Wendy F- thanks for the recommendation of The Secret Mistress. I’ll look for that in print.

    2. I prefer the AW of the Roxton books to his more recent performances – he’s made some changes I’m not keen on (I’ve mentioned them in reviews if you’re interested). That’s not to say he’s delivering poor performances, not at all.

I’m afraid I can’t judge the level of angst in books. I generally like angsty stories, so low angst for me might be way out of your comfort zone! The audio of His at Night is fabulous, though (shame they didn’t get Kate Reading to do Not Quite a Husband as well – I’d have been all over that like a rash!) – I’d say it’s not all that angsty, but…

As is probably obvious from the lack of reviews of historicals with JE as the narrator, I don’t like her either. Her English accent is dodgy – I have no idea why she gets used in so much HR. I still haven’t forgotten the book where she gave a Scot an Irish accent.

I admit, that bit in the Balogh – or rather the lack of it – frustrated the hell outta me, too. She then wrote it in a free novella, I think… but that’s cheating! It should have been in the book!

      1. A free novella, huh? LOL! I find that amusing. I doubt I’ll look it up.

I’ve read your reviews of AW’s recent work and so far I must only be listening to older stuff? I have noticed the whispering some, but he does that for Rockcliffe’s voice all through that series, so it hasn’t stuck out too much. I’ll look up some of your newer reviews again.

I’m going to try His at Night some time in the next few weeks because it’s on Audible Escape. Plus it’s Kate Reading! I have to give it a try. thanks for your opinion on the angst level. I realize right now I probably ought to just read children’s book, because my tolerance for stress is really low! :-)

        1. I love His at Night. There is some emotional drama but it’s offset perfectly by humor. Reading does her usual stellar job of finding nuance and character in the story. And it’s Sherry Thomas’ prose, which is delicious in her HRs. I hope you enjoy it; I listen to it over and over!
