woman in armchair listening to an audiobook

With hurricanes landing in the Southern US, Wildfires in CA and bad storms hitting the UK, I was reminded of a revised 2020 calendar I saw a few months back:

I don’t know about you guys, but I think I’m going to be kinda relieved when the aliens get here!

  1. Hello from Canada! I get my audiobooks from the public library.
So in the last 2 days, I had to DNF Royal Holiday by Jasmine Guillory. I enjoyed her previous book but this one was so slow and the narrator could not do a good British accent for the male love interest, I just couldn’t continue after about 50%. Then I lucked out and got a 1 week loaner for The Love Story of Missy Carmichael by Beth Morrey, her debut novel. I’m really enjoying it, I loved Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and this is along the same lines.

    1. Lucky you! My local library in the UK doesn’ t have a great selection of audiobooks – I’m Audible all the way!

Accents are a big thing for me, too – and bad English accents *shudder*.

  2. i just finished a re-listen of Heyer’s swashbuckling Beauvallet. It’s such a fun book, well narrated by Cornelius Garrett. Right now I’m re-listening to Dying to Please by Linda Howard, narrated by Susan Eriksen. I was in the mood for something safe and not taxing. It’s been a rough week.

I’m still deciding on what to start next, although Pretty,Pretty Boys is in the running, as well as The Rake, by Putney. Both are available as part of Audible Escape, so I’ll get around to both eventually. Caz, I read your reviews for both and they look great.

I’m waiting on Hazard by Stella Riley because I don’t have any credits. Although A Splendid Defiance is on Audible Escape….

    1. A Splendid Defiance is superb – I didn’t know it was in AE (we don’t have AE in the UK), but I’d definitely pounce on it asap!

I think the degree to which you enjoy Pretty Pretty Boys (the story) will depend on whether you like the narration. Tristan James is a solid B-grade narrator for me most of the time; and while I know people who ADORE his work on that series big time, I’m in the “like it well enough” column. I know that Em didn’t care for the narration when she finally caved to my continual prodding at her to read/listen to the series! If you do pick it up in audio, I’ll be really interested to know what you think, so do drop me a comment here or on GR.

      1. I decided to go with the print version of Pretty Pretty Boys. I wasn’t loving the narration samples I listened to, and the books are available on kindle unlimited. The samples I listened to (from several books in the series) seemed fine, but maybe a tad to slow for me. Plus I couldn’t always distinguish his character voice from his narrative passage voice, although, obviously I didn’t have a long time to listen. I liked the sound of his voice, which is big for me. I think if these weren’t on kindle unlimited I’d have gone for the audio and probably enjoyed it just fine.

        1. I have the same concerns as regards character/narrative voices and sometimes the differentiation between the two leads isn’t that great. I’ve listened to Tristan James quite often and I don’t… dislike his narrations, but he’s not an A-lister for me.
