woman in armchair listening to an audiobook

Say goodbye to June! It’s the last Friday in June and we don’t even want to think about where July will take us – massive wildfires, a world-stopping pandemic, predicted major hurricane season, MURDER HORNETS – just don’t say “Hold My Beer”. 1. I think that I’m going to go for a synced reread/first listen to Gregory Ashes’ ‘A Union of Swords’ series this week. I got an idea of who might be the Keeper of Bees whilst reading ‘Wayward’ and need to see how my theory holds up in the earlier books………

Em’s in for a good time – I thought both the book and audio of Two Rogues were lovely.

    1. Much as I love the Hazard and Somerset books, I’m sticking to print. The narration just doesn’t do them justice IMO – there’s not enough emotion or animation, and after listening to Charlie David’s wonderful performances in the Borealis books, I can’t help drawing comparisons and feeling like Ree and John have been short-changed.

I’m on tenterhooks waiting to find out who the Keeper is! I’m rubbish at working out things like that though, so I don’t have any major theories.

      1. Okay, I’ll be led by your experience and stick to rereading them!

I’ll have to think of something else to listen to………

Do you know when Slippery Creatures in coming out on audio?

        1. I’m going to be compiling our July Picks shortly – Slippery Creatures is on there, although I can’t remember the exact date. Cornell Collins in narrating.

As to H&S in audio – I’ve reviewed several of the earlier audios here and have given B grades to the narration and TJ has many, many fans. It might work for you better than me. I just finished Josh Lanyon’s Secret at Skull House and would recommend it and Murder at Pirate’s Cove – I’ve reviewed it, so watch this space!) And I LOVED L.A. Witt’s If the Seas Catch Fire, which I listened to last weekend. Feel free to hit me up for some more recs if you want them!

          1. I’ve been on Audible and, after listening to a few samples, have decided to go for Alexis Hall’s ‘The Affair of the Mysterious Letter’. I haven’t read this book but, from your review, listening sounds better anyway! I love his wit and I think a rollicking good tale is what I need at the moment.
I’ve only read the first Adrien English book by Josh Lanyon and thought it was okay, but didn’t like it enough to read the rest of the series, so am a bit dubious about ‘Murder at Pirate’s Cove’ – although I did like the narrator’s voice for the policeman!
I’ve never read anything by L.A.Witt but ‘If the Seas Catch Fire’ looks a bit heavy for now.

          2. The Adrien English series is fantastic, but it does get angsty – the narration is wonderful. Those two Lanyons I’ve mentioned are cosy mysteries – so fairly light-hearted. Not a lot of romance right now, but it’s definitely brewing.

L.A. Witt tends to the angsty, too – but not all the time! I’ve enjoyed some of her Anchor Point books and her Skin Deep series. Oh – N.R. Walker’s The Dichotomy of Angels just came out (with Nick J Russo narrating) – I really enjoyed the book when it came out; a bit of a Good Omens vibe going on there!

May Archer’s Off Plan which I just reviewed, was quite good, and I liked her earlier Love in O’Leary series (I reviewed one or two of them here) as well – Iggy Toma and Alex Cendese narrate Eden Finley’s Fake Boyfriend series, which was fun, too.

Have you listened to Alexis Hall’s Pansies? That’s lovely.

  2. Ha, life sometimes makes your decisions for you!

I went ahead yesterday and ‘bought’ The Affair of the Mysterious Letter, then saw your post suggesting Pansies, which I have read. I loved it but have only read it once and had it on my Audible wish list. So then I really wished that I’d bought Pansies instead.

This afternoon I went to put on The Affair whilst I was on the exercise bike and couldn’t find it. Turns out that it was in my basket as I hadn’t completed the purchase, so I was able to buy Pansies instead!

I’d forgotten how great the beginning is……………….
