A Good Audiobook Speaks Volumes – 2018 Holiday Blog Tour & Giveaway!

2018 A Good Audiobook Speaks Volumes Holiday Blog TourWe are joining the Audio Publishers Association and several other audiobook review blogs on this November’s blog tour! Since November is the busiest travel month of the year, it’s a perfect time to listen to audiobooks, whether you are traveling by plane, train, car or even virtual travel by book!

Of course, here at AudioGals, we like to suggest holiday romances for all occasions. Kaetrin recommends A Firefighter’s Christmas Gift by Vivian Arend, narrated by Tatiana Sokolov. “It’s a feelgood holiday-themed novella-length audio about a relationship-shy single mother and the firefighter who wants to be in her life. Tatiana Sokolov narrates all of Vivian Arend’s Canada-set contemporary romances and they make a fabulous author/narrator pair.”

Melinda reviewed another Christmas themed audiobook in 2014, Merry Christmas, Baby by Jill Shalvis (see our review here). “It’s a short story, so it makes for a great short road trip or long commute listen.” And in Audible’s Romance Package, look for the same title, Merry Christmas, Baby, by Katie Reus, narrated by another AudioGal favorite, Sophie Eastlake!

Caz has some recommendations for road trip listens: “Because I commute to work by car and frequently have a journey of at least twenty minutes each way (currently, I’m travelling a lot farther) and I’m usually alone, an audiobook is the perfect companion. I plug my trusty mp3 player into the car’s audio system and off I go. With my eldest daughter now away at university on what is literally the other side of the country, I’m making more long journeys as well – 6+ hours each way – which also makes for a nice chunk of listening time. If she’s with me, all the better, as she enjoys listening to audiobooks, too, and many’s the giggle we’ve had when it comes to the naughty bits in a romance novel!

“On our last journey, we got stuck into Loretta Chase’s The Last Hellion (review)– author and narrator Kate Reading are favourites with both of us, and we’ve listened to Lord of Scoundrels (review) and Dukes Prefer Blondes (review) as well as Sherry Thomas’ His at Night (review) on our travels; Nicholas Boulton’s barnstorming performance in Laura Kinsale’s Flowers from the Storm (review) was one of the first we listened to together, and she’s got a list of others she wants us to listen to next time.”

If you’re looking for a gift for an audiobook fan (HINT HINT HINT), Kaetrin loves her newest purchase, Jaybird X3 wireless earbuds. “They have a long battery life – around 8 hours and the sound quality is excellent. They’re also a good length – I bought some Sony ones a little while back but they were too short and strangely weighted, so they kept falling off when I had them around my neck when I wasn’t listening. As I wear my earbuds pretty much all day when I’m at home, this was a big deal. The Jaybirds are comfortable, and they charge fast too. They come in multiple colours – mine are red although Jaybird call it “roadrash”.”

New technology in Bluetooth listening aids are open-ear wireless headphones. These don’t actually go inside the ear, but in front, using bone conduction technology. Melinda tested AfterShokz Blues, which uses vibrations to transmit sound waves directly to the cochlea. “I haven’t tried them for music, but for speaking, they work great if you can get used to the slight physical sensation of the headphones pulsing! On the plus side, you can still hear other sounds, so I think they’re safer for running and walking.”
