Woman listening

It’s near the end of the dog days of summer, and something about staying inside, in the cool, listening to audiobooks, seems to resonate. Did you know, however, that the dog days aren’t really talking about dogs but about constellations that appear in the Northern Hemisphere skies from early July to mid-August? The star Sirius – the dog star, Canis Major in Orion – rises and sets with the sun during this time, which is the hot and sultry time of year for those of us north of the equator. It’s one of the brightest stars (one source says The Brightest Proper Star) and early astronomers and observers marked its appearance as heralding in a period of lethargy, disease and foul tempers in women. For the Southern Hemisphere, the dog days of course mark the coldest time of year, so that kinda negates the whole theory. Ok, now I’m confused. Back to my audiobook and a tall glass of iced tea…
