Frisco’s Kid by Suzanne Brockmann

Frisco's Kid by Suzanne BrockmannNarrated by Lauren Fortgang

I first read the Tall, Dark and Dangerous series a couple of years ago, and now I’m working my way through the audiobooks. The books were fun – I love Brockmann’s writing and story-telling, and generally have enjoyed all the books she’s written. This one is no different, and I think it got a great treatment with narrator Lauren Fortgang.

In Frisco’s Kid, former Navy SEAL Allen Francisco, AKA Frisco, is still trying to get his knee back in shape so he can be on active duty again. He can’t accept that the accident 5 years ago destroyed his knee and he’s lucky to even be walking. He feels he’s only half a man if he is no longer a SEAL, and considers following in his father’s footsteps by drinking himself into oblivion. But his sister Sharon has already beat him to it – to avoid jail, she has to enter a rehab program, leaving her 5-year-old daughter in Frisco’s care for several weeks.

Enter two important people – the cute next-door neighbor Mia, and his sister Sharon’s ex-boyfriend. It seems Sharon swindled the thug out of $50,000 and he’ll do anything – beat up a cripple and kidnap a kid if necessary – to make it clear he wants his money. So, we have Frisco, feeling unworthy and impotent (uh, wrong choice of words) and an overweight felon – enough conflict? Yeppers – add in his falling for but messing up the relationship with Mia, and you’ve got a romance salad.

Fortgang does a bang-up job with the narration – I like her style and most of her characterizations. I had 2 quibbles; ok, 3: the voice for college-aged Thomas was pitched too high; the voice for poor Lucky (the one who got the really bad Pillsbury doughboy cover for his book), was really pitched too high and made to sound too goofy (how unsexy is that?); and the last 20% or so of the book, I think Fortgang was suffering from allergies and a stuffed nose. Imagine having to pronounce Allen, Mia and Natasha (allad/bia/datasha) with a stuffed nose – then imagine having to listen to it.

Those are really just nitpicks though – I enjoyed it.
