One Second by Dannika Dark

*This is the conclusion of a series that must be read in order. The review below may contain spoilers for prior books. If you have not yet listened to the Seven Series see the AudioGals review for book 1, Seven Years.

The seventh and final book in the Seven series is as dramatic, adventurous, and romantic as each every one of the books that preceded it, plus more. What a fitting conclusion to one of my all-time favorite urban fantasy, shifter-based romances! Bringing together all of the main characters from the prior books, and even some of the secondary characters that we were introduced to along the way (vampires, relics and mages), Ms. Dark concludes this fantastic series with one dangerous and potentially revolutionary threat and fight, as well as a glimpse of what the future is to bring. In One Second, we also find out several more background-revealing secrets and get to see the coupling of two of the last remaining single Weston pack members.

While many of the couples take part in this story, the primary focus is on my favorite couple, the couple that started it all and has remained the consistent rock of the Weston pack, Austin (the alpha of the Weston pack) and his mate, Lexi. In this book, the Weston pack not only has to fight a band of rogues that is threatening to take their land, but they must also make some life altering decisions about their future, including whether or not they will try to conceive a future leader of their pack. This is not an easy decision – as shifter pregnancies are highly dangerous – and Lexi has already had a number of life threatening miscarriages.

Will the Weston pack be able to conquer the rogues before they weaken their pack and take over their lands? Will other, larger and stronger packs (such as Prince’s and Church’s packs – heroes from prior books in the series) join forces to help them defeat this threat? And just who is leading this effort, and why have they targeted the Weston pack in particular?

As if the incredible story were not enough, the narration, as always, is top notch and miraculously consistent. How Ms. Poole is able to keep the consistency of the voices of this large cast over seven books is simply mesmerizing, and makes the Seven series one of my top favorite series of all time to experience in audiobook format.

Ms. Poole brings to life characters from the most feminine and alluring variety to the most masculine and rugged. Moreover, her attention to the mood of the scene and ability to communicate the immediacy of threats in the way she delivers and times her narration is simply fascinating. Ms. Poole has become the Seven cast to me, managing to make each character sound as though it were being voiced by a different narrator, and I simply could not imagine the story having had the same impact without her being the one to have told it.

All in all, I cannot recommend the Seven series highly enough. If you enjoy urban fantasy or paranormal romances, and you haven’t yet tried this series, then I strongly urge you to listen to Seven Years, the first book in the series. If and when you do, you are in for one spell binding treat!
