Make Me Love You by Johanna Lindsey

Make Me Love YouNarration by Beverley A. Crick

Every once in a while I listen to a romance audiobook that while the blurb attracts me, the actual execution of the story just misses. Unfortunately, that was the case for me for Make Me Love You. In the end, while I was interested enough to listen to the entire story, and definitely felt invested enough to know how the story was resolved, I just had trouble feeling the love connection between the hero and the heroine. In that regard, it just felt too forced and unlikely and I ultimately had trouble believing that a heroine and particularly the hero, in this case, with such deep seated familial animosity, could overcome this animosity based on the way the story occurred. Fortunately, the above average narration by Beverley A. Crick was a driver in helping me listen to this title to the end.

They are family enemies who have engaged in no less than three duels of late. However, as dire as those prospects are, Brooke Whitworth would rather face her prospects with the ill-reputed “Wolf” – Lord Dominic Wolfe – than continue to live the miserable existence that she has led in her own home. Victim of a brother who has abused her since she was a child and apathetic parents, Brooke embraces this unlikely match as if it were her last chance for salvation.

Lord Dominic Wolfe, however, is having none of it. No way is he going to marry a Whitworth after everything that family (particularly Brooke’s brother) has done to his. However, he or she who fails to abide by the Prince’s order that they marry stands to lose their family’s lands to the crown. Who will win this battle of wills and can love conquer all?

Beverley A. Crick has a pleasing voice that makes listening to her narration a pleasure. She also demonstrated a good range of voices for distinguishing both the male and female characters in this cast. I also generally enjoyed her timing of the delivery which aided to set the mood that Ms. Lindsey penned. I will definitely be happy to listen to more of Ms. Crick’s narrations in the future.

All in all, I had high hopes for Make Me Love You based both on the blurb and my fond memories of long ago Johanna Lindsey romances (some of the first romances I remember reading, years before I developed my love for audiobooks). This one, while mildly entertaining, just didn’t do my memory justice. However, given those fond memories, I definitely would be willing to try to listen to another of Ms. Lindsey’s new romances in the future.
