King by TM Frazier

KingNarrated by Molly Glenmore and Rob Shapiro

Lovers of dark romance will not want to miss King by T.M. Frazier. This book grabbed my attention from the very beginning and kept me enraptured throughout. Combining the perfect mix between suspense and an erotically-charged, forbidden-tinged romance, King was a hit for me. However, please note this book is not for the faint of heart. It contains disturbing subjects, including violence, abuse and an extremely possessive, badboy, alpha hero. Additionally, King ends in a huge cliffhanger, so if you want the full story you will need to listen to the sequel, Tyrant, to learn how it all ends. Fortunately, both Molly Glenmore and Rob Shapiro do a great job with the narration, and are returning for Tyrant. So now I am eagerly looking forward to listening to the conclusion.

Imagine waking up homeless, starving and with absolutely no recollection of who you are. This is the dilemma that our heroine, “Doe” (nicknamed after “Jane Doe”) finds herself in. She scrapes by for a short while until she befriends a prostitute who takes her to a motorcycle club party. There her friend instructs her to find a willing biker to bed in an effort to find a meal ticket. Doe doesn’t even know her name, much less whether this is the kind of thing she used to partake in, but hunger finally wins out over humility and her gnawing intuition that this is not the type of life she hails from.

At the MC party, which is being held in the honor of King, who has just been released from prison, Doe opens the wrong (or perhaps right) door and catches a glimpse of all sorts of surprises. It doesn’t take long, however, for her world to completely fall apart when she finds herself caught as the unsuspecting accomplice of her friend’s robbery attempt on none other than King.

As the king of his outlaw world, King is the one man you don’t want to owe. Doe tries hard to beg for her life and tries even harder to convince King that she had no idea of her friend’s plan. King, however, demands that she pay with her life. Not her death, but his ownership of her life. As far as King is concerned, Doe is now his, to do with as he wants. But things are not always what they seem. And when the truth behind Doe’s past and the one thing that King wants more than anything in the future collide, in the end this story will leave you questioning just who owns whom.

King is narrated by Molly Glenmore and Rob Shapiro in the typical New Adult fashion, with Ms. Glenmore narrating all the chapters from Doe’s point of view and Mr. Shapiro, the one’s from King’s. This style works well to highlight the perspective being shared at different points in the book, especially when it becomes clear that King is hiding certain key facts that necessarily shape their individual experiences.

Both narrators do a marvelous job of producing believable gender appropriate voices. Moreover, each one of the numerous same gendered characters had their own distinctive intonation to allow for easy differentiation. Additionally, both narrators did a good job of pacing their deliveries to adequately convey the mood of the scene. From the faster paced action scenes to the more deliberate and thought-provoking suspense filled ones and then tantalizing, hot chemistry filled ones, both Ms. Glenmore and Mr. Shapiro helped frame the story and add depth to what was already a spine tingling, heat filled story.

All in all, if you enjoy romances that skirt just around the edge of your comfort zone, and cause you to question just who is good and bad, then you will highly enjoy King.
