Priestess Dreaming by Yasmine Galenorn

Priestess DreamingNarrated by Cassandra Campbell

Yasmine Galenorn’s Otherworld series is one of my favorites. I’m always on pins and needles, wanting yet another installment. So, I was beyond pleased to have the chance to review Priestess Dreaming, the sixteenth book in the series.

As one might expect from the title, this story is primarily about Camille, priestess to the Moon Mother and the eldest of the D’artigo sisters. The fact that she’s half-fae still causes some trouble with her moon magic, but she is becoming more proficient with death magic. She, her three husbands, her two sisters, and a host of friends and extended family are formidable foes.

The war in Otherworld is raging. Camille is summoned to the court of The Queen of Shadow and Night and given a mission. She is told to journey through the kingdom of the Elder Fae in order to find and awaken The Merlin who has been sleeping for longer than anyone can imagine.

As is the case with all of the Otherworld novels, narrator Cassandra Campbell is in top form here. Her narration is one of the reasons I enjoy these books so much. She brings the ever-growing cast of characters to life in a way that seems effortless. Common sense tells me that it must be difficult to keep all the characters straight, but Ms. Campbell rarely makes a mistake. She uses a wide range of pitches, accents and other vocal effects to ensure no two characters sound the same.

Ms. Galenorn writes books that are funny and serious at the same time. There are several scenes in Priestess Dreaming that made me laugh out loud, and several scenes that made me teary-eyed. Ms. Campbell reads both the light-hearted and the serious parts with equal skill. Her pacing is spot-on, making me feel like I was actually living the story.

We don’t hear much about Shadow Wing and his minions here. Camille is sent on her mission while other family members and friends continue to do their part to bring the Demon Lord down. Some readers have complained about the side missions Ms. Galenorn has created for some characters, but I find them quite enjoyable. It’s a good way to flesh out the characters.

It’s hard to say too much about this book without giving spoilers. Trust me when I say that fans of the series won’t want to miss this installment.
