A Video of Laura Kinsale Interviewing Nicholas Boulton!

Recently, Laura Kinsale traveled to London and, to our delight, not only interviewed Nick Boulton, but videotaped it. She’s sharing that interview with us today and I’m sure you will see this tremendous narrator in a new way! And since you’ll hear Nick performing portions of her latest audiobook release, Uncertain Magic (which released last Friday), we’re following up this delightful interview with Melinda’s Uncertain Magic review.

Now for a few words from Laura,

“Finally I got to be IN the studio! In London! It was quite a thrill to be able to visit while Nick Boulton and Garrick Hagon of The Story Circle (my producer) were recording my historical romance Uncertain Magic. I had a chance for a quick chat with Nick (in which he shared his dark secret for getting through the steamy scenes, shhh…). In the latter part of the video, you can just barely see Nick behind the glass in the sound booth, but you can hear him clearly. It was amazing to watch Nick and Garrick and the very skilled RNIB sound engineer work so smoothly together to correct any errors on the fly. I’ll bet you can’t tell where the playback stops and Nick picks up reading live. I couldn’t, unless I could see him speaking. It was also fun to be at the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) Talking Books Studios. I was pleased to find that income from commercial work like ours goes to further recording books for the blind.

Forgive my patchwork video editing, but it was a fun and casual chat so you get the feel. Later Nick took Garrick, my husband and me out to dinner at the fabulous (and interesting!) St. John restaurant in Clerkenwell. A memorable visit for an author!”

As a postscript, Laura asked me to add that the sound engineer, John Wakefield, is a cutie!

We also interviewed Laura and Nick in October, 2013 in a recorded interview. You can listen here.

When I read Uncertain Magic years ago, it was my first Laura Kinsale book and I immediately started buying her backlist, eager for more. And although I completely enjoyed many of her other titles, I never found another quite like Uncertain Magic – it remained in a class of its own. I remember it clearly even after all these years and consider it one of my favorite Kinsale titles. Needless to say, hearing it performed by Nick Boulton lifted it to an even higher level!

Now for Melinda’s review of Uncertain Magic I mentioned earlier. You’ll find it immediately below.

  1. Doe anyone remember the name of a network television show a few seasons back about a group who recorded books? It was a sitcom but only lasted a very short time.

  2. I loved this video! So fascinating to get a glimpse of what goes on in the studio during production of the audiobooks. Mr. Boulton is such an amazing talent. Just incredible. Thanks for posting this!
