Scandal Wears Satin by Loretta Chase

Scandal Wears SatinNarrated by Kate Reading

Loretta Chase is one of those authors I’ve heard about for years, but just never got around to reading. A couple of months ago, I listened to Silk Is for Seduction, Book 1 in The Dressmaker series, and fell in love with everything about it. I was thrilled to move on to Scandal Wears Satin, second in the series.

Sophy Noirot has been keeping herself and her sisters out of trouble for as long as she can remember. She’s quick-witted, pretty, and extremely loyal to those she loves. Sophy is a very busy woman, working in the dressmaking shop the Noirot sisters own by day and supplying the London scandal sheets with bits of gossip by night. She’s glad her older sister has found love, but Sophy has no time for such frivolity.

Harry, the Earl of Longmore, has been captivated by the mysterious Sophy ever since he first laid eyes on her. However, the fact that her older sister married the man who was supposed to marry Harry’s younger sister has caused quite a stir. Harry’s mother is furious and she intends to bring the Noirot sisters to ruin. It certainly wouldn’t do for Harry to become involved with Sophy, no matter how alluring she might be.

When Clara, Harry’s sister and one of Maison Noirot’s best customers, runs away to avoid an unwanted marriage, Sophy and Harry join forces to bring her back to London and save her reputation. Together, they set off in search of Clara.

There are a few threads in Scandal Wears Satin that are left over from the previous book. For this reason, I recommend starting with Silk is for Seduction and continuing from there. If you’re a lover of historical romance, and of Kate Reading’s narrations, you won’t regret it.

Ms. Reading is a narrator I’ve admired for a long time. Her performance of Scandal Wears Satin is nothing less than masterful, confirming her place as one of my favorite narrators of historicals set in England. Of course, I’ve heard her narrate books set in the U.S., and she’s equally brilliant, but there’s just something special about the British historicals she narrates.

I never had difficulty telling characters of the same gender apart. Ms. Reading is able to change her pitch and accent just enough to portray everyone distinctly. I appreciate her ability to deepen her voice slightly when performing Harry and other men in the book without it sounding forced.

When Harry and Sophy are alone together, Ms. Reading allows the listener to see their feelings for one another. Through her skilled narration, I was able to see Sophy grow into a sensual woman, as opposed to the inexperienced, yet curious, young lady I met in the previous book. Ms. Reading makes the verbal sparring between Sophy and Harry practically sizzle. Through their banter, I could sense the sexual tension.

Harry is depicted as a rather foolish, shallow gentleman. For this reason, I must admit to being skeptical of a relationship between him and a woman as smart and practical as Sophy. However, as the book progressed, and I learned more about our hero, I came to understand just how perfect these two really are for one another. I found myself cheering them on, especially when things between them grew strained. I wanted them to defy the rules of society and claim the HEA they deserved.
