Extreme Danger by Shannon McKenna

If you love your romantic suspense with a big serving of erotic romance, then Extreme Danger may just be what you’re looking for. I must admit that I hadn’t previously listened to any other books by Ms. McKenna, so the heat level of this romance caught me off guard, which definitely affected my enjoyment of this title. In the past, my experience with romantic suspense had been limited to authors who focused on the suspense with a touch of romance (think Sandra Brown), but Ms. McKenna’s books definitely seem to follow a different recipe: lots of steamy erotic scenes with a suspense plot layered in. On the plus side, the narration by Nelson Hobbs is above average making this a good choice in audio format if it fits the type of romance you are looking for.

Becca Cattrell is looking to spice up her life by completing a number of bucket list items on her “take a few more risks and have some more fun” to do list. It is during one such event–skinny dipping in a stranger’s pool and then having a hot one-night stand with the house’s mysterious but alluring occupant (Nick Ward)–that she finds herself smack dab in the middle of a mafia sting operation.

Nick Ward can’t help himself the night Becca just appears at the top-secret location where he is meeting the mafia group he is looking to take down. But once she is found there, he is forced to come up with a quick story to try to help her from becoming another casualty of this no-mercy group who is determined not to leave any witnesses behind.

As Becca becomes an unexpected participant in the undercover operation, Becca and Nick will have to work together in numerous ways both to try to save the sting operation and to fulfill their undeniable desires.

Nelson Hobbs does a good job of bringing this fast and erotic filled romance to life. From his portrayal of Becca as a somewhat naive and yet surprisingly courageous woman, to his confident portrayal of Nick, Mr. Hobbs does a good job of enacting the personality traits of each character.

Mr. Nelson’s attention to details, such as adding a Russian accent to Nick’s undercover mafia dialogues and his ability to portray a softer more feminine tone for Becca’s dialogues, further lends authenticity to the story that Ms. McKenna crafted.

All in all, I really enjoyed the suspense angle of this story though I found myself fast forwarding through a number of the very long-winded, more blush-inducing scenes. Perhaps in the right mood, however, this combination may have been more appealing. In the future if I’m looking for a spicy, romantic suspense, I will definitely look to try another of Ms McKenna’s titles, but probably look elsewhere if I’m looking for a typical, romantic suspense title.

  1. I have fond memories of this one but it’s not my favourite. McKenna is a particular kind of erotic romantic suspense and definitely not from the Nora Roberts school! LOL

    1. LOL! You are definitely right about the different schools of romantic suspense Kaetrin: ) I’m actually listening to a Nora Roberts RS title right now–and the bedroom scenes are definitely of a much tamer variety. I’ll give this series another shot when I’m looking for a heat-filled suspense title now that I know what to expect!
