Ninja at First Sight by Penny Reid

If you’re looking for a short, unique, witty, and addicting New Adult listen then I can’t recommend Ninja at First Sight (book 4.75 in the Knitting In the City series) highly enough. I absolutely loved the philosophical debates between this unlikely college couple, and the spot on narration by Em Eldridge. The only drawback is that it’s a prequel novella and to get the full story you will need to listen to Happily Ever Ninja (Book 5 in the Series).

Fiona is an 18 year old, incredibly smart but reclusive freshman who is studying high level science courses on her way to becoming an engineer. But Fiona is no ordinary star student. She has experienced tragedy and loss which has profoundly changed her. She went from being a star gymnast, who had qualified for the Olympic team at 14, to two years of fighting a brain tumor with radiation. Needless to say, after such a life altering experience and the extreme sheltering by her parents, just two years after the battle of her life she has yet to experience a real relationship.

Greg, in turn, while equally unique, is completely different. Greg is a 23 year old college junior and former marine. He’s sarcastic and can be brutally honest but his somewhat caustic manners combined with his unparalleled good looks only seem to drive the girls wild, even if he is a one woman man and is presently in a relationship with someone else. What could these two possibly have in common? But when chance meetings, and their deep existential repartee leave each panting for more, each will need to make some hard decisions about their futures.

This being my first experience with Em Eldridge, I didn’t know what to expect. However, not only did Ms. Eldridge win me over, but I was hooked! Ms. Eldridge has such versatility with her voice that she is able to sound like completely different people.

Moreover, not only are her characters completely distinguishable but she is one of those few narrators who is able to create authentic characters of both genders. To that effect, I absolutely loved her British accented voice for Greg. She brilliantly nailed his sarcastic tone, while equally flourishing in her depiction of the sweet, reclusive but honest Fiona.

I can’t wait to listen to the conclusion of Fiona’s and Greg’s story and listen to more of Em Eldridge’s expert narrations!
