Midnight Games by Elle Kennedy

midnight gamesNarrated by Allyson Ryan

Lovers of action-packed, suspense-filled romances will not want to miss Midnight Games by Elle Kennedy. In fact, I’m hooked as I not only loved the main characters but also many of the secondary characters which feature in adventure romances of their own later in this series that already has seven released titles (Midnight Games being only the third book). Adding further allure to this hit audiobook is my new top-favorite narration by Allyson Ryan.

Although this is the third book in the series, if you haven’t yet experienced any of the Killer Instincts series before, don’t worry. This was my first Killer Instincts title and, while I definitely got the sense that a number of the characters had been previously introduced, I had no trouble following the suspense or romantic arcs.

When a mercenary team gets ambushed, another elite operative team comes to the rescue reuniting Isabel Roma and Trevor Callaghan. They had met before on another mission on which they had crossed paths. However, Isabel, with her own insecurities brought on by her family background and past experiences, disappeared without a trace, leaving Trevor even more determined to hunt her down and make her his.

But these are dangerous times and not only has Trevor’s team been attacked for a yet to be determined reason, but his group’s commander, Morgan, has disappeared. Can both these teams, including Noelle (Isabel’s tough as nails commander who appears to have her own history with Morgan), come together to find Morgan before their enemies do? Moreover, if they are triumphant, can Trevor convince Isabel (a master at hiding in plain sight with secret identities) to stick around and give them a chance this time?

Allyson Ryan delivers a stunning performance as narrator. Not only is her timing impeccable making listening as easy as listening to an action show on TV, but it also greatly adds to the intensity and heat of the various scenes.

Ms. Ryan also manages to personalize each one of the many distinctive characters in Elle Kennedy’s colorful cast. Male, female, accents and even hoarse voices are nailed to a T by Ms. Ryan. I loved so many of the characters. From the tough as nails Noelle to the slightly sweeter, a little more insecure, Isabel on the female side to the standard sounding tough mercenary and yet compassionate edged Trevor and even cruder, but equally enticing, team member “D” (Derek), I was completely mesmerized by Ms. Ryan’s narration which helped me visualize the image that Ms. Kennedy was painting.

All in all, I greatly enjoyed Midnight Games. Not only was this a memorable story, but now I can’t wait to dig in to the rest of the stories of this intriguing mercenary/elite operatives romantic suspense series. Especially on my radar are Morgan’s and Noelle’s story in Book 5, Midnight Action, and D’s story in Midnight Revenge (Book 7).
