Desire Untamed by Pamela Palmer

Desire UntamedNarrated by Rob Shapiro

Desire Untamed is the first book in what promises to be a sensual, action-packed series featuring a group of shapeshifting men and the women who make them whole.

Kara MacAllister doesn’t see herself as anything other than average. She’s a preschool teacher in a small Missouri town, and she cares for her dying mother. There’s nothing extraordinary about any of that. She believes this until the night a stranger enters her home and sweeps her away to a house filled with men who swear she’s their Radiant, the key that will unlock their ability to shapeshift. Kara is thunderstruck and understandably uncertain about their claims. Still, she hears them out, waiting for something to prove or disprove what they tell her.

Lyon is the chief of the ferals. He knows how important Kara is to his men, but he can’t understand why she’s so important to him personally. When another warrior is chosen to be Kara’s mate, Lyon vows to leave her alone, but, as time passes, he realizes that’s a whole lot easier said than done.

Rob Shapiro is a narrator I’d never listened to before. I found his performance of Desire Untamed to be quite good. He possesses a certain resonance that works extremely well for voicing male characters. I found this especially effective since this book features warriors, who are intent on being alpha males.

Shapiro’s depiction of Kara worked well for me. He raised his pitch slightly, but did not go into full falsetto. He allows us to see Kara’s strength, as well as her fear. I was particularly impressed with the way he depicted Kara when she became one with the earth and truly became the Radiant.

Kara and Lyon can’t fight what they feel for each other. Lyon is the only man Kara fully trusts. This is hard for him, especially when Lyon learns someone is threatening Kara. Shapiro makes his longing clear whenever Lyon is speaking to or thinking about Kara.

I sometimes had trouble telling Lyon and the rest of the warriors apart. Although Shapiro did an excellent job portraying Lyon’s character, there just wasn’t that much differentiation between him and the other men. This made dialogue tags a necessity.

Lyon and Kara’s story is wrapped up quite nicely by the end of Desire Untamed. However, there a few threads left hanging. I’m hoping to see the second book in audio format soon. I can’t wait to see how things turn out for the rest of the feral warriors.

  1. I just bought the e-book and the audio book Desire Untamed by Pamela Palmer based on your recommendation. I’m a HUGE Outlander fan, along with other historical fiction. I also have a good time with Jill Shalvis, Lori Foster and Jill Mansell in contemporary fiction. But then there comes a time when a girl just wants to go full throttle fantasy, with humor if possible because life is just too short. I love Lynsay Sands work, Laurell K Hamilton, and now I will give this new (to me) author Pamela Palmer a try. I love it when i find a new author and they already have 7 or 8 books written in the series that I am just starting. Hurray for me! No waiting!!
