Our June 2014 Picks

What romance audiobooks releasing in June do we believe are especially promising? We feel these titles are all good bets based on author, narrator, personal knowledge, or print reviews of the story content. Or maybe it’s just a gut feeling we have.

Written in My Own Heart's BloodWritten in My Own Heart’s Blood by Diana Gabaldon

Narrated by Davina Porter

A highly anticipated favorite with Gabaldon’s “voice” Davina Porter – Melinda

One word: Jamie. Actually two more: Davina Porter – Megan

WIMOHB tops this month’s release list for me. I adore Jamie Fraser and Davina Porter is in my top 3 all-time favourite narrators. I cannot wait to hear what happens between Jamie, John, and Claire! Oh, and Roger Mac and… well, you get the picture – Kaetrin

This is an immensely popular series. I liked the three books I’ve read, and definitely plan to finish the series soon. Porter is a brilliant narrator. It’s a double win – Shannon

It’s Book 8 in the Outander series with Davina Porter. Need I say more? One of the finest audiobook series – period – I’m all caught up in the excitement of its release and the upcoming Starz series (August). Although I’m not yet to Book 8 in my listening, I’m working on it – Lea

The Black Hawk 240The Black Hawk by Joanna Bourne

Narrated by Kirsten Potter

This series has garnered lots of praise, including here at AudioGals.  I love historical romance novels with a high level of suspense, so this is my top pick for this genre for June – BJ

This isn’t the last in a series, as there’s a new book from Joanna Bourne coming out later this year, but it’s currently the last of her books to make its appearance in audio.  Again, if it’s as good as the previous three (and I’m sure it will be!), it’s going to be a terrific listen, both in terms of story and narration – Caz

Because Joanna Bourne + Kirsten Potter combo is awesome – Megan

Joanna Bourne excels in the writing and Kirsten Potter excels at the narration – Lea

Black Hawk by Joanna Bourne with Kirsten Potter – really, June is a terrific month for romance audio! Several anticipated books covering many genres, featuring the best author/narrator pairings! Win-win-win (take that, Nicholas Sparks) – Melinda

Sweet Dreams

Sweet Dreams by Kristen Ashley

Narrated by Emma Taylor

Taylor did a great job with The Gamble and I expect another winner for KA fans – Melinda

Kristen Ashley writing about hot alpha men? Need I say more? Although I’m not familiar with the narrator (Emma Taylor), this is my top choice for June. Can’t wait to listen to this one – BJ

Sunset Embrace

Sunset Embrace by Sandra Brown

Narrated by Ellen Archer

I’ve liked the few historical romances I’ve read by Sandra Brown. Sunset Embrace was one I read a few years back, and there was something both gritty and sweet about it. I’m excited to see it available in audio – Shannon

An old West tale originally published in 1990, I recall enjoying this one in print format and I’m sure Ellen Archer will make it even better. I wish we saw more of these old-fashioned Western romances – Lea

Tempting FortuneTempting Fortune by Jo Beverley

Narrated by Alison Larkin

I’m so excited these books are finally being released on audio. I read this years ago – there have been so many books in between that I confess I don’t remember a lot about it other than that I liked it very much. So the audio will be like experiencing a new book but with a guarantee of readerly enjoyment. I count that as a win – Kaetrin

Beverley is one of my all-time favorite historical romance authors. Larkin is a superb narrator. I’m really pleased to see Beverley’s backlist being made available to those of us who are audio enthusiasts – Shannon

Vixen in VelvetVixen in Velvet by Loretta Chase

Narrated by Kate Reading

Another not-to-be-missed pairing of top-notch talent – Melinda

Kate Reading has done the most amazing job with the first two books in Loretta Chase’s Dressmakers series, and I’m sure will be equally fabulous in this final book – Caz

Loretta Chase and Kate Reading – another combo that can be trusted for a great listen – Brenda

Devil to PayDevil to Pay and Happily Never After by Jeaniene Frost

Narrated by Tavia Gilbert

Even short stories from the Nighthuntress World are worth a credit when it’s this duo – Brenda

Jeaniene Frost and Tavia Gilbert working together can always tempt me to listen – Lea

Rusty NailedRusty Nailed by Alice Clayton

Narrated by Heather Smith

The sequel to last year’s hit, Wallbanger. I read Book 1, and although this is a relatively new narrator, I am willing to give it a shot to hear Ms. Clayton’s witty, humorous, and steamy writing brought to life – BJ

Better Homes & HauntingsBetter Homes and Hauntings by Molly Harper

Narrated by Amanda Ronconi

Guaranteed LOL scenes makes this one an auto buy – Brenda

How to School Your ScoundrelHow to School Your Scoundrel – Juliana Gray

Narrated by Carmen Rose

Juliana Gray’s Princess in Hiding novels keep me coming back for more, and I’m really looking forward to the last one, as I can’t wait to see how the author redeems the hero, who was the villain of the piece in her previous series – Caz

Rock Chick RescueRock Chick series – Books 2 – 8 by Kristen Ashley

Narrated by Susannah Jones

Narrated by the excellent Susannah Jones, I’ll be dividing up my listens so I don’t burn out but I know they’ll be a kick – Brenda

Something SweeterSomething Sweeter by Candis Terry

Narrated by Xe Sands

A fun contemporary small-town-series author paired with an excellent narrator makes this a pick of the month – Melinda

Shattered HearneShattered by Kevin Hearne

Narrated by Luke Daniels

A highly anticipated June (in 2014 as a whole to be honest)  release is this Urban Fantasy, the seventh entry in the Iron Druid ChroniclesBrenda

  1. Currently listening to Sunset Embrace–great narration–great pick for June. Another interesting find on Audible in June was the “Parallel” series by Deidre Knight–read the first print release starting in 2006–Listened to the first and thought it was well done by Joel Richards–those fans of futuristic/time travel would really appreciate this series though they need to be read in order because the stories are so intertwined.

  2. I am alternating between reading and listening to WIMYOB aka MOBY. I have the Jeaniene Frost books on my iPod ready to listen to once the heavy rain stops and I can get back outside to walk.

  3. Davina Porter is so good. I found the St. Just Mysteries just by searching her name on Overdrive. She also does some older M. C. Beaton/Marion Chesney books…..Davina Porter is in a class all by herself IMHO.
I haven’t enjoyed the Outlander series for the last three books, so It’s been awhile since I’ve listened to one, but the new book sounds interesting.

Vixen in Velvet…….oh yeah…….I have both the audio and e-book on pre-order.

    Great post AudioGals….Thanks.

    1. I just finished reading the Chase, Mel, and it’s superb. I will be jumping all over the audio when it comes out next week :)

  4. I haven’t started Janet Evonovich’s latest Top Secret Twenty One but it is always a fun listen. Definitely waiting for Sweet Dreams by KA. Would not have thought to listen to Rustynailed, but now am thinking about it.m love Wallbanger in the written form.
