.That blog post was too funny! And while my adventures haven’t been that amusing, I’ve done some pretty dumb things while listening to audiobooks. I used to listen when I was grocery shopping, but I’ve since learned that, list or not, if I actually want to come home with the things I need, I have to go sans entertainment.

My DH won’t listen to audiobooks while driving, because once he was on a 13 hour drive across the Middle of Nowhere, drove right past the Only Turn in the Middle of Nowhere, and went on for 2 hours Further and Further into the Back of Beyond. Somewhere around the Mexican border (and we’re not talking any part where there’s a bridge) he realized his mistake. This was in the days before cell phones. I think he coasted into the only gas station south of the Pecos some time around 2 am.
And this was just a foreign language tape. I’ve never yet heard him attempt to actually speak French. ;)

I’m so glad he made it to a gas station! Is he always so focused?
About two years ago I was making the 4 hour drive to my brother’s house (all on one interstate–no turns necessary) while listening to an audiobook. Somehow I ended up two hours south of where I should have been. I drive this road multiple times a year and ended up taking over 6 hours to make the trip. Plus I got really lost in one city. I pulled over and called my son in tears and he used google maps to guide me out of the city and on my way.
It didn’t cure my audiobook habit though. I’m a hopeless addict.

I now know to not mix driving instructions with audio listening. When in an unknown city, it’s book off and the GPS lady on.
I haven’t had near the Mexico experience but I have driven to the wrong destination on auto pilot while caught up in a book. Five years ago, we moved to Tulsa from a town 30 minutes away. Twice, I found myself back in our former town as I was paying more attention to listening than driving to my new home!!
