The Many Sins of Lord Cameron by Jennifer Ashley

Narrated by Angela Dawe

Jennifer Ashley’s Mackenzie series follows four Highlander brothers on their journeys to HEA. She drew us in with the unparalleled plot of Lord Ian Mackenzie, a man with Asperger’s Syndrome who is thought to be mad. Then she gave us a long look at the lives of Mac and Isabella, who were married but separated when the series began. Now, Lord Cameron is a true rake, caught seducing a married woman at a house party by the story’s heroine, Ainsley Douglas. Of course, it bears noting that Ainsley was in his bedchambers attempting to steal a document at the time, and also noting that wasn’t the first time he caught her.

Ashley’s prose is truly sensual, and when Cameron met Ainsley for the first time, she looked at him and “tangled his heart in a pair of wide gray eyes.” Cam and I fell in love at the same exact moment, just a few minutes into the book. Then we took the ride that was their relationship.

Angela Dawe is the narrator on all four books in the series. My first thought when I heard her voice at the beginning of the Lord Cameron audiobook was that – eek! – she sounds hoarse! I hope the publisher didn’t push her too hard – the last three were released within a month. Once again, Dawe adds life to an already superb story, giving each character unique traits and differentiating the various characters well. Her accents are excellent; her narrative enticing. Ms. Dawe, please take a well-deserved break and drink a lot of green tea and honey!

As I pondered our Steam Factor, it occurred to me that the steam is not from actual body parts or actions being described, but from foreplay and anticipation. Just the description and dialog of Cam asking Ainsley how many buttons he can undo on her dress is steamy, the kind of heat that makes you double and triple check that no one else can hear what your headphones are playing. Yet it’s nowhere near erotica or even romantica. Angela Dawe reading Jennifer Ashley imbues the room around you with exactly what they are feeling and thinking, what they see, what they taste and smell, and you are there.
